Day 3: Mon 17th: Ennerdale YHA to Borrowdale YHA

Late departure today as we had only a 15km hike. So departed at 8.20.

Initially, the walking was easy up the road towards Black Sail YHA which is the last point of civilisation going up the valley. 

The road was wide and easy because it was used for logging lorries and went for about 4km. 

After the YHA the path became soft and boggy underfoot as we were much closer to the valley floor. The path was also hard to navigate due to the terrain.

That’s the Gill in the middle and the start of the climb. 

 We then turned left up beside Loft Beck Gill, which was like climbing a staircase up into the clouds.

Visibility was lost at 400 meters and once we were on top we had to use the cairns to navigate the path.

The path turned from boggy and gravel in places. Visibly reappeared at 400m and we dropped into a slate mine which is still operating but also offers adventures in  Via Ferrata and Canyoning and Zip Wiring.

We stopped here for lunch and then continued our descent into Borrowdale YHA arriving at 13.30. It's a fab YHA with a great common room and lovely grounds we could not get checked in till 3.30. Did some washing, and had some food and beers.  

The total distance today was 15km and climbed to 600m.

Tomorrow is 30km and is 2 climbs to 600m,  so tomorrow will be the hardest from a climbing perspective! 😱
