Day 4: Tue 18th: Borrowdale YHA to Grasmere YHA

Beautiful morning took some photos of the hostel and hostel grounds. 

Headed out of Borrowdale towards Stonethwaite and a gradual climb up the valley towards Lining Craig.

It was gradual until we got near the top then it got steep.

and just before the Craig it was a staircase and scramble for about 100m ascent(and forgot to get a photo). We stopped on Lining Craig at 500 meters as the views were spectacular back down the valley but hard to capture in a photo so I took a video. 

It was then a gentle climb to the top but it was weird as there was a perfectly laid path the best path we had since leaving Barrowsdale. This was at 600 meters and was about half a km long.

We then started to descend towards Grasmere but instead of dropping us all the way to the valley floor, the path took us along this undulating ridge at 500 meters that was really tough going and slowed us down much more than expected. At about noon we realised that we were only at 10km and it had taken 4 hrs and the prospect of having to do another 600-meter climb and 20km was going to be very tough. I was too optimistic in the planning. 

We sat down with fabulous views of the valley and rebooked all the accommodation moving everything a day out until the 25th of April. This was a buffer and a day off but not anymore. I even had to ring booking.com. 

At the end of the ridge, I took another video. 

we then descended into Grasmere and found the YHA dropped our bags, found a pub and had a pint and food, sitting in the glorious sunshine. Food and drink always taste so much better after a huge hike.
